Cristóbal de Morales

"El Siglo d’Oro"

This golden age of Spanish polyphonic music was quite remarkable. The elegance of their melodies and harmonies, the sure craft of their counterpoint, and the passion behind the notes meant that Spanish composers were not only enlivening the music of the Cathedrals in Seville, Madrid and Cordoba, but were in demand at many other prominent courts and churches, including the Sistine Chapel.

This program will explore motets and other music by three of the greatest names of that time: Tomás Luis de Victoria, Francisco Guerrero and Cristóbal de Morales, and will feature Morales’ haunting Misa "Mille Regretz." Based on the famous four-part chanson of Josquin, this "parody" Mass makes use of six parts, while still often quoting the earlier work.

The concert will take place in the appropriate acoustics of St. Paul’s Cathedral, located across from Balboa Park at 5th Avenue and Nutmeg St., at 7:30 p.m., on Saturday, June 21st , 2008. Tickets will be $15 general and $10 for students, seniors and Early Music Society members.

"An Exaltation of Motets"

For your seasonal nourishment this year, try Pacifc Camerata’s "holiday sampler" program, with a little bit of everything from Medieval to early Baroque. Hear a chant by Hildegard von Bingen, Ave Marias by both Robert Parsons and Francisco Guerrero, a beautiful setting of Joseph lieber, Joseph mein by Michael Praetorius, several Spanish villancicos, an Epiphany motet by Jacobus Clemens non Papa, plus other works by William Byrd, John Dunstable and Andrea Gabrieli. This beautiful a capella music is the perfect antidote to the heavy serving of commercialism and treacle felt by many at this time of year. So come and partake -- better yet, treat a friend to this banquet of sound!

"The Lombard Nuns"

We are pleased to present a program of music by an amazing group of composers working in northern Italy around 1600. Most were nuns, and although little-known today until recent research, these women composers were skilled and innovative, and put on some of the most compelling performances in that area, drawing listeners from throughout Europe. This program will feature a range of offerings by these remarkable women, from smaller vocal works to more extended settings with instrumental accompaniment, such as the colorful Magnificat and Dixit Dominus by Isabella Leonarda.

The concert will take place on Saturday, June 23, at 7:30 p.m., in the wonderfully appropriate acoustics of St. Paul’s Cathedral, located at 2728 6th Avenue, across from Balboa Park, in Hillcrest. Tickets will be $15 general, and $10 for students, seniors and members of the San Diego Early Music Society. Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina

"Pope Marcellus Mass"

This program will feature the famous "Pope Marcellus Mass" by Giovanni da Palestrina. Long believed (incorrectly) to be the deciding "argument" which persuaded the Catholic Church to continue the use of polyphony in sacred music, this beautiful work continues to inspire with its soaring melodies, bright harmonies, and skillful combination of clear text with well-crafted counterpoint.

Also included will be a number of works by Orlando di Lasso and Tomás Luis da Victoria.

The concert will take place on Sunday, April 22, at 7:00 p.m. in the spectacular St. George’s Serbian Orthodox Church, located at 3025 Denver St., overlooking the Mission Bay Tourist Information Center, in Clairemont. Admission will be $10 general, and $7 for students, seniors, and members of the San Diego Early Music Society. "Sacred Space in Music"

We'll ring in the New Year with a program illuminating the spaces that composers through the centuries have responded to with their music. The program will include Gregorian Chant as well as music by Hildegard von Bingen, Giovanni da Palestrina, Juan Vasquez and Melchior Franck. Of special interest on this program will be a world premiere of portions of "Badarak," an Armenian Liturgy by San Diego composer George Kirazian. Although newly composed, this piece has its roots in ancient Byzantium, and its evocative music reveals echoes of the paths of thousands of Armenians throughout the diaspora.

The concert will take place on Sunday, January 7, at 4:00 p.m. in San Rafael Catholic Church, located at 17252 Bernardo Center Drive in Rancho Bernardo. A freewill offering will be taken. For more information, contact the church office at 858-487-4314 or Pacific Camerata.

An encore performance will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 12, in the historic Church of St. Philip the Apostle, located at 2660 Hardy Dr. in Lemon Grove. This concert is under the auspices of the Lemon Grove Historical Society. Tickets are $10.00, $8.00 and $5.00.
