Heinrich Schütz

"Early German Baroque"

Enjoy our presentation of music by an amazing group of composers working in northern Germany around 1600, whose bold experiments in harmony were to influence much of the Baroque era. The feature work will be Heinrich Schütz’s profound and moving Musikalische Exequien, also known as the German Requiem. One of the composer’s grandest compositions, the Exequien was part of a memorial for Prince von Reuss, and offers texts of comfort chosen by the Prince before his death. Also on this expressive program will be works by Johann Hermann Schein, Dietrich Buxtehude, and the double choir motet "Ecce Dominus" by Hieronymus Praetorius.

The concert will take place on Saturday July 1, at 7:30 p.m., in the wonderfully appropriate acoustics of St. Paul’s Cathedral, located at 2728 6th Avenue, across from Balboa Park, in Hillcrest. Tickets will be $15.00 general, and $10.00 for students, seniors and members of the Early Music Society. Josquin des Pres

Josquin des Prez

"Josquin the Master"

This performance will highlight the music of Josquin des Prez, generally considered to be the first major composer of Western music. Josquin’s compositions have been admired and emulated from the 15th Century to the present, and while he wrote a wide variety of music, this program will dwell on his sacred repertoire, including several motets as well as his sublime "Missa Pange Linga." Based on a Gregorian chant, this Mass was Josquin’s last, and stands as one of the towering achievements of the Renaissance. The program will also include pieces by Jacobus Clemens non Papa, Giaches de Wert and Robert Parsons.

There will be two performances:

The first will be in the Hibben Gallery of the San Diego Museum of Art on Thursday evening, March 9, at 7:00 p.m. Tickets will be $15, $12 for Museum members, and will be available through Ticketmaster or at the door. (Camerata donors can obtain the Museum member discount at the door.)

The second performance will take place on Saturday, March 18th, at 7:30 p.m., in St. Andrew’s-by-the Sea Episcopal Church in Pacific Beach. St. Andrew’s possesses wonderful acoustics for this music, and is located at 1050 Thomas Ave., just east of Cass St., and one block south of Grand Ave., in Pacific Beach. Admission will be $10 general and $5 for students, seniors and Early Music Society members; tickets will be available at the door or in advance through Pacific Camerata.
